Yesterday’s most exciting adventure involved food and a mystery. I might have to hire an investigator. That will have to wait as it came near the end of the day and if I want Time to remain on my side I need to respect its order.
Yesterday I met Beruthiel (I had to think to remember her nom de blog) and her son to discuss details of my staying in her apartment this summer and caring for her cats. Does anyone understand the rationale for dubbing her Beruthiel? It’s a very obscure reference. I’m impressed if you do. It was a lunch meeting near the Bronx Courthouses which is near Yankee Stadium. It’s not that far as the crow flies but I hope you’ve noticed that I’m not a crow and I can’t fly. It’s always difficult traveling east-west in the Bronx and Westchester. The topography is a series of north-south river valleys. I used Google Maps to find the best route and it was bus, subway, bus. We tend to think of the 6 train as running north-south, but it actually runs northeast-southwest, so it was fairly direct. The problem was the buses, the first was late and the second stuck in traffic. I got there 20 minutes late which made us rushed for time as Beruthiel’s son, let’s call him Eärnil, had to get back to work. We had a quick lunch, I had chicken wings, mashed potatoes, and plantains. We worked out most of the details of my staying at her apartment. Eärnil sometimes stays there, that’s why we needed to meet. My only concern was taking care of; There is an air conditioner that’s been put away for the winter. He’s going to put it in the window of what will be my bedroom.
My next stop was Stop & Shop near me. I tried an alternate route, two trains and one bus. I think that was for the best even though it was a longer distance. On the way home from the store the bus driver did what she’s supposed to do, pick people up at the first stop, which is the last on the way there. They used to make people walk around to the second stop, which is not right by the store, and take a break in between. I complained to the MTA and they did something, most drivers started to take their break at the stop and would then let people on. I had trouble with one driver so I’m still leery.
As I had a big lunch I decided to have just peanut butter for dinner; then I had a culinary flash of genius. When I was shopping I bought Eggo chocolate waffles. Not chocolate chip, all chocolate. I had never seen them before. I also bought two kinds of ice cream as there was a super sale on Turkey Hill, 1.5 quarts for $2. I got triple chocolate and chocolate-caramel-espresso. Can you see where I’m going? Last time I went to Aldi I got Hot Fudge. Heaven on earth awaited me. I spread peanut butter on the waffle and put the chocolate-caramel-espresso on top of it. Then came the mystery. I couldn’t find the hot fudge. I searched all over. I didn’t break down and cry; I substituted chocolate syrup. I’m a stoic. It was still heaven on earth, just not the best neighborhood of heaven, the part where they give you banjos not harps.
Now that I got myself hungry I’ll have breakfast, matzoh brei to make your bubbe cry.
