I never got dressed yesterday so writing about my day is simple. I blogged. I walked down the block to the supermarket to get milk and eggs, and I finished watching Iron Fist This might cost me all my street cred but I loved season 2. It left so many threads dangling that I can’t wait to season 3. My one issue is that I thought that it would end with a teaser for Daredevil season 3, it didn’t. Now to attempt to write about Wednesday and Thursday.
Wednesday’s excitement was getting an MRI. I made the appointment when all my joints were hurting. The MRI was for my back. I forgot that till I got there. All my joints and my back stopped hurting. I was getting tests for a condition I no longer had. Why? Because it was odd that all these conditions arose at once and I’m trying to rule out an underlying problem. If it were an x-ray I might have changed my mind as that carries health risks. I worry about the waste of money. It’s not my money but unnecessary tests are a big driver of rising healthcare costs.
I am pretty sure I had an MRI when I was the hospital for a month back in 2001, I had several CT scans a week. The reason I’m not sure is that my impression was that it was not memorable. I can now assure you that MRI is no big deal. It has a terrible reputation and I’m the guy with ridiculously bad anxiety so you might think otherwise. The thing about anxiety is that it doesn’t make sense. There’s no rhyme nor reason to the triggers. My friends’ kid melts down over everyday events but has no trouble walking on 6-foot-stilts. I am fine not understanding other people’s anxiety, I don’t understand my own. What I don’t get is the bad rep MRI has in the general population. Sure you are in a fairly narrow tube and there are loud noises, but it’s not nearly as uncomfortable or loud as riding a rush hour subway. On the train you have people pressing all around you. In an MRI you lay on a cradle with a pillow. The only problem was that you aren’t supposed to move. It’s like posing for a picture for half an hour. As soon as I went in my nose started itching. That’s inevitable. Your nose knows when it can’t be scratched and jumps at the opportunity. By the end my neck was hurting. I could have asked for more cushions but I knew I was almost finished by then. I almost was on the edge of falling asleep for much of the test. I have not heard the results yet. I’ll let you know when I do.
On Thursday I went to vote in the Democratic primary, and then to a Mets’ doubleheader. At least that was the plan. It took me well over two hours to cross the Bronx by bus to get to City Island where I’m registered. I waited half an hour for a bus that comes every 10 minutes. I gave up and walked to another bus stop and took a different bus.
My candidates did middling. The one I cared the most about Alessandra Biaggi defeated Jeff Klein for the State Senate. Jeff Klein was the leader of the Independent Democrats that caucused with the Republicans and let the GOP control the Senate. He got personal power and perks, to hell with the people in the state. I was delighted that he was turned out by a large margin. Zephyr “West Wind” Teachout lost for Attorney General. She was the candidate I cared the second most about. She a Fordham Law School prof and reformer. She ran for Governor four years ago which was ridiculous and I voted against her .She had no experience. This was a job she was consummately qualified for and one where we need a reformer. NYS government is rife with corruption and the NYS AG has national prominence litigating the financial industry. She lost. I don’t even remember the full name of the candidate for lieutenant governor I voted for. His last name was Williams. His first something what starts with a J and has two consecutive “a”s. Jumaane? That must be it, I didn’t get a spelling correction. I obviously was not that vested in his candidacy. I reluctantly voted for Andrew Cuomo for governor. He’s an interesting case. Before his first time I was excited about him. He was eminently qualified and unusually skilled an intelligent. As governor he’s had some bit progressive achievements including the legalization of same-sex marriage. What I have against him is not fighting vigorously against corruption, tolerating the Independent Democrats, but most of all letting his personal feud with NYC Mayor Bill DiBlasio get in the way of doing what’s best for the City. He’s an effective governor but with a thin skin. His opponent was the totally unqualified Cynthia Nixon. Being an actress does not prepare you to run a state, especially one as byzantine as New York. If she were serious about public service she’d start smaller; run for state senate or assembly. I can even see running for congress or U.S. senate. A legislator doesn’t run things, experience is not as important. I will never support the celebrity chief executives, Reagan, Ventura, Schwarzenegger, Trump, or their ilk.
I ended up missing the first gave of the doubleheader, that was a classic come from behind victory for my beloved Metropolitans. I even missed the first pitch of the second game as they started very early. I could have made it but stopped for dinner thinking the game started half an hour later. The Mets won that one too. I don’t like getting to the game after Alan, then he chooses the seat. He sits way up high. He says it’s tradition. It’s his thing. I like sitting as close as I can.
OK now I’m all caught up and I have to run. I have a musical doubleheader today; a classical music fundraiser featuring Maria Di Meglio, the cellist from Harpeth Rising, then the Anna/Kate band in the evening. Both shows in Brooklyn. I have to check the logistics to see if I can eat at the Mile End Deli and have poutine for dinner.
