Anti-Procrastination

I slept late and I had a late start writing today; for once that’s appropriate. It’s what I’m going to write about, at least after I write about yesterday. I’ll put it off a little longer.

It’s Friday, what do I do every Friday? You with your hand up in the back; Right I go to therapy! My journey to Harrison starts with a walk to the Fordham MetroNorth station. That’s directly adjacent to the campus of Fordham University; that’s where WFUV is located FUV stands for Fordham’s University’s Voice. In the early days of radio, they tried to give the call letters meaning. They still do but there are far fewer available. My favorite call letters are for the Columbia University station. The Columbia Broadcasting System took all the obvious choices so Columbia got creative. It’s WKCR. Can anyone figure out why? You have to know your ancient history. Before the Revolution Columbia was Kings College. I have no outside verification for the rationale, it isn’t on the station’s website’s history section or Wikipedia. But I’m willing to take bets on this.

I’m procrastinating again. I’m not writing about WKCR but WFUV. WFUV thinks it’s Fordham University’s station. Fordham thinks its Fordham’s station. My Gentle Readers know better; it is my station. I have ceded financial control to Fordham and that makes it very difficult for me to enforce the programming control which is mine by divine right. What I do have is the ear of the Saturday hosts, Kathleen Biggins of Mile Fáilte, Megan Townsend and Ryan Flattery of Ceol na nGael, Bob Sherman of Woody’s Children, and most of all, John Platt of Sunday Supper. Sadly John had a stroke right before Falcon Ridge. There have been various fill-in hosts but it’s going long term to Sarah Wardrop. They are trying to work out John’s return. I’ve known Sarah since she joined the station. I think of her as one of the kids. It doesn’t help that she’s one of those people that doesn’t age. She’s a delightful person and we’ve talked many times but I don’t really know her musical tastes, she has not been on-air much. I figured I might as well try and be a good influence and send her the music that I’d usually send to John. Yesterday I made my first trip to give her physical CDS. I also emailed her digital albums.

Then I went up to therapy. It was an “I need someone to talk to” session as opposed to a “let’s work on my problems” session. They are both necessary. I almost forgot, I promised her that I’d write this. I was feeling lonely and rejected and she threw me out of her office! Her meager excuse was that my time was up and she had another patient. Can you believe it?

You realize that’s a joke right? It is what happened but I was not really mad. I joked about it with her. That’s how I relate to people; maybe that’s why I’m lonely and rejected.

Now on to what I’ve been meaning to write for days. It was motivated by this Facebook post by Christine.

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but it is OCTOBER 1. How did this happen? What happened to late September? I still have stuff I was supposed to do in September.

I knew he answer, she should have too as I had written about it in Wise Madness at old site. Tales of Brave Ulysses. It is all the fault of the Chronoklepts.

Chronoklept: noun A malicious creature or spirit that makes people procrastinate. From chrono: time + klept :steal.

I used to write about them quite a bit but I haven’t in a while and I need to catch up. They are a clear and present danger and people must be not only informed, but inspired to act. Is there one amongst you that has not suffered an attack by these malicious creatures? Sometimes they take the form of humans, coworkers, your boss, your friends, who interrupt you just as you are about to get something done. More often they are noncorporeal and work directly on your mind. They tell you to watch just one more episode of the show you are binging, read one more article on Wikipedia, click on one more link from Facebook. They remind you to sort your CDs when you have work to do. They write fascinating blogs to get you reading.

They don’t just work on individuals but on humanity. Why do you think it takes us so long to act on global warming? Rebuilding our infrastructure, and making a workable and humane immigration policy? It’s all the doing of the Chronoklepts. Christine asked me why I didn’t have them banished. Like I have the power. The Chronoklepts are mighty; few are those that can face them, none can banish or kill them.

Perhaps the Avengers, earth’s mightiest heroes could do it. No, they wanted to but you know how things are; First the Chitauri and Loki attack New York, then Ultron, The Civil War, and most recently Thanos. It’s always something. Maybe the Flash, Superman, or the crew of the Waverider could do something with their Time Travel skills. Interesting thing, they are real, just as real as the Avengers, but by the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle they and the Avengers cannot be observed at the same time.

Perhaps the Doctor could do something, she’s a Time Lord, but as he hasn’t done anything in any of his previous incarnations I would not hold my breath. The Chronoklepts are here to stay. The best we can hope for is to keep them at bay as we get one thing accomplished. Then work again on the next thing. We better, or billions will be living on land that will soon be under water.
