Up with Bach

This fatigue is getting to me; might I have chronic fatigue syndrome? I don’t think so but something isn’t right. I’d much rather be my usual high energy self; it even affects my writing. It’s why I’ve started writing in the afternoon, my least favorite time. Even black coffee isn’t helping.

I watched Up last night. Maura raved about it when it came out and said that I would particularly appreciate it. Maura was right. It’s exactly the kind of romance I find irresistible. Young Carl and Ellie got the notion in their heads as children that they had to get to Paradise Falls in an inaccessible lost world in South America. They kept that notion their entire lives and when Ellie dies it is all Carl has left, and he makes it a reality. It portrays humans not as they are, but as they ought to be.

Did anyone else have trouble processing that Charles Muntz the explorer they idolized is still alive and looks and acts younger than Carl? Charles is an adult at the start of the film. He’s at least 20 years, more likely 30 years older than Carl. As Carl is 78 when his adventure begins that means that Charles is at least 98. I expected some sort of explanation but it never came. I loved the film, it is made for me, but that is such an obvious issue. Do other people totally ignore things like that?

In the middle of it I took a break to play my first game of HQ. I just recently discovered it was available on Android. The topic was movies. The second question was about Up. If this were not a game being played by hundreds of thousands of people, but just me people would assume that the question came up because the Internet knew I watched the movie. People do not appreciate the power of coincidence.

Stop the presses. I just made a major discovery. I am listening to WQXR as I write this. It’s my most frequent writing music. Elliott Forrest (I have to remember to double every letter than is sometimes doubled), the announcer just mentioned The Bach Store, a pop-up shop on 56th and Broadway. A pianist plays Bach every day in November from Noon to 5 PM and then there is a guest musician in the evening. The pianist/mastermind is Evan Shinners. I sublet a room from Evan for two weeks six years ago. That was when I was a nomadic hunter/teacher. Evan is a brilliant musician. I saw him perform both classical music and his own rock compositions. He’s great at both. I have not heard from him in years. I just checked and it looks like he left Facebook. Now I have just a few days to check this out. I will. You can read about the store on the website, The Bach Store and this article in the New York Times, A Pop-Up Shop That Offers Bach Preludes, Fugues and Condoms. I’m always amazed at the accomplished people that I know.
