This is new and exciting. I am at WFUV and writing directly on WordPress from the computer I use to take pledges. That means i don’t have my macros to insert links and my customized spell-check. I hope this comes out in a reasonable approximation of English.
I didn’t update yesterday because i woke up 4:00, left home at 5:15 and didn’t get home until 7:30. I watched Supergirl, did a few quick things, then went to bed. There was no time to write. Now that i figured out how to update from the station I’ll try and do that every day. These will be shorter entries.
Two days ago was the second Tuesday of the month; that means John Platt’s On Your Radar. John’s guests were House of Hamill, Katherine Rondeau, and Eric Lee. They are all friends of mine and were all at NERFA. It’s been about a month since I’ve seen them. Fred couldn’t make it so i had to bring my camera and be official photographer. I sat with Phyllis and her friend.
Eric was up first. He eschewed fiddling and just played his guitar and sang. He has become such a good songwriter and guitarist that he can do those at an elite level. His album Heartache Town made my top dozen of the year. I’ve known him since he was a teen and take a propriety interest in his career. When he does well I kvell. Tuesday night i kvelled.
Katherine feels like a friend from way back but i think i just met her two Falcon Ridges ago. She’s a musician turned PhD student turned musician Through everything turn turn turn. I will use her own description of herself, She has large lungs. I would say a theatrical style of singing, channels her inner Ethel Merman.
Half of House of Hamill is an old friend, Rose Baldino. She was in the band Burning Bridget Cleary who I discovered my first NERFA back in 2010. The other half is her husband, Brian Buchanan from the band Enter the Haggis. I’ve known of him longer, but only met him after he married Rose. As you might guess from the band names, both bands are Celtic. House of Hamill describe themselves as Radiohead meets Riverdance. What’s so weird is that I’m not a fan of either but HoH is one of my absolute favorite bands. Their alternative self-description is Celtic music with weird music. That sounds like a band that I love. I know them well enough that i could feed John a question for the interview. He asked Rose, “Who would you rather marry, Harry Potter or Brian Buchanan. Three days before her wedding she found a letter from a friend asking her that. It was from when she was a star-struck 16-year-old. She said that she married Brian so that’s the answer. It doesn’t What if she preferred Harry but Harry said no and married Ginny. It’s a poor choice by Harry, but people often make poor choices.
All On Your Radars are equal but some are more equal than others. This was more equal than most.
I had to wake up at 5 the next morning to get to WFUV for the first day of the Member Drive. The first day i want to be extra early so i can get up to speed before the volunteers that i supervise arrive. I was fortunate enough to get a ride home from Peter. I got to sleep by 11 but woke up at 4 instead of 5. I figured it wasn’t worth going back to sleep. I ended up being tired much of the day. To make things worse i had a Crohn’s attack right after breakfast. I kept contemplating leaving early but I waited it out and some time in the late afternoon it cleared. It’s not the first time i worked when i was ill.
Forgive me but I didn’t write when i got home last night. Instead I watched the third part of the CW DC shows crossover. That’s a three part serial combining Supergirl, Arrow, and The Flash. I have to admit that i like all the shows and loved the crossover, Elseworlds. It’s leading up to next year’s Crisis on Infinite Earth based on the legendary crossover comic series. I’m geeking out. I like when the scale becomes cosmic.
I’m thinking of wimping out and canceling my plans for tonight and tomorrow. Being able to write here makes it more likely that I’ll go out. Tonight is the last show ever, by the Kate/Anna band, one of my top discoveries of the year. I’ll write up my discoveries my next free day.
I feel this is not up to my usual standards. The mechanics is getting in the way of my creative process. It’s better than not writing at all.
