Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Forgive me Gentle Readers for I have sinned. When i listed my favorite discoveries of the year I worked without a net, my spreadsheet. I was on Facebook this morning and saw that Christine Lavin was doing a gig with Crys Matthews. I somehow forgot Crys from my list. That is no reflection on the Marvelous Ms. Matthews. She is not just a favorite musical discovery but someone who became an instant old friend. Maybe that’s why I forgot her. No, it’s because I’m an idiot. She was my my second discovery of the year and when I did my mental checklist of discoveries was always there. She was just hiding in my brain when I wrote the entry. That’s funny as usually Crys is not stealthy; she’s one of those people you know is in the room with you, she’s effervescent. It’s no big deal to write a love song to your wife, but Crys also wrote one to her dog. She’s my people She’s a great songwriter. She’s delightful and charming and political without being overly earnest. This is what i wrote when i discovered her at the Common Ground Coffeehouse back in March, March (and Sing) For Our Lives.
Yesterday’s goal was to leave my recliner as little as possible. I succeeded! I got up to cook and go to the bathroom and that’s it. That did wonders for my back and legs. I watched Thor Ragnarök again. I might lose my intellectual cred but it’s a great film. Superheroes are the gods of contemporary mythology, Thor is also a god of Norse Mythology, he was born for the role. The film is funny and often lighthearted but it does a great job at the epiphanies, the appearances of the Gods. It’s helped by the fact that Led Zeppelin already wrote the perfect Thor leitmotif, Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song.
It doesn’t get more Wagnerian than that. The Hulk has a great entrance earlier in the climatic battle. It’s a literal Deus ex Machina. You can’t help but feel it in your gut. There’s not much more you can ask of from a film. I meant to stop in the middle and make dinner but i could not pull myself away until the closing credits.
I”m back at WFUV volunteering for the Irish shows today. Give a call to donate before 11 or after noon. There is an hour break during the mass. They never take my suggestion and pitch during the mass, the thank you gifts could be papal indulgences of sins. Call now and you might talk to Megan Townsend one of the hosts of Ceol na nGael. She takes calls during A Thousand Welcomes.
