Riding the Whirlwind

I saw two different surgeons today so I’ll start with that. First I saw my ophthalmologist for my post-op for my left eye and the pre-op for my right. Everything looks good. If my insurance company approves the other eye this week the surgery will be on March 4, otherwise it will be March 18. I can’t do the 11th. After that I’ll get a prescription for my reading glasses and will fully rejoin the sighted. I’ve been waiting so long for this.

After the ophthalmologist I came home and had brunch. Then I was off to the other Montefiore campus on the other side of the Bronx to see my general surgeon. The Moses campus is a 15-minute walk from here. The Hutchinson Campus is a 6-minute walk followed by a subway and a bus and then a 10-minute walk. It’s not nearly as convenient. I love my surgeon. Now that I can see I knew he reminded me of someone but I couldn’t figure out who. Then ten minutes later it came to me, Storm DiCostanzo! At first all I knew was that it was somebody I liked. That’s how my mind works. I can link an emotional memory to a face without knowing who it belongs to. I am going to see him in a month, after my cataract surgery and then we’ll schedule my hernia surgery. The hernias will be done robotically. I’ll only be in the hospital a couple of days and when I get out I’ll be self-sufficient. That’s a big difference from when I had my gall bladder removed.

My life is a medical whirlwind as I make up for a dozen years without insurance. In the next couple of months I’m going to have two operations and three infusions.

The rest of this week will be a cultural whirlwind. Tomorrow I’m seeing an M.C. Escher exhibit at Industry City in Brooklyn in the afternoon and watching a concert window by Rebecca Loebe (low-bee). Friday and Saturday I’m seeing Joe Crookston, once with James Downes, and once with Pat Wictor. On Sunday I’m seeing Rachael Kilgore and Jean Rohe hen heading straight to the Knicks/Spurs game. On Monday I’m getting my first Infusion and then seeing Rebecca Loebe at Rockwood Music Hall. On Wednesday I’m seeing Kate Copeland. That’s a fast pace, even for me.
