I hate not updating every day; now i have to play catch up. I’m writing at the WFUV again which makes things that much more difficult. I don’t have Word to fill things in for me and autocorrect mistakes. But I write anyway because I don’t want to disappoint My Gentle Readers.
On Saturday I had my Fantasy Baseball draft. We used to hold it at Joe’s house but he moved to Florida. We had it at a hotel in Woodbridge NJ. Nick who lives in Pleasantville NY gave me a ride. I enjoy my annual trip to the draft with Nick. It’s our only time to hang out. He works in sustainability and we end up talking about that. He’s my sustainability guru. I’m trying to talk him into writing a blog. I can be his blog guru. I enjoy the guru relationship from both ends.
Our league started in 1989, this was our 31st draft. That deserves respect. How many informal groups last that long? We have had some turnover but about half of the original members are still in the league. For the first time, we are short a team this year. We have always had 12 teams, this year only 11. If you’d be interested in joining the league next year let me know. We actually lost two teams this year but i recruited Marco for one of the openings. He’s one of my bridge friends that i used to see all the time but now never do. I knew he’d fit right in. We are a very geeky group. You better be ready to pick up on obscure science fiction references if you hang out with us.
After the draft someone asked Marco what he thought. He summarized an auction fantasy baseball draft perfectly. “It takes a lot of time and when you are done you hate your team.” As usual I’m starting the season near the bottom of the standings. I usually pick up, take the lead somewhere in the middle, then get struck by injuries and end up in the money but not in first.
After the draft we had our Polar Beer party. Why? It’s the party the league winner hosts and is supposed to be in the winter. We couldn’t find a good time this year so we held it at a bar that shares a parking lot with the hotel we held the draft in. I’m a cheap date.
I was supposed to go to the Hurdy Gurdy in Fairlawn after that and help out doing merch. The problem was that I was working on 2 hours of sleep. I knew I couldn’t make it and let Ron know. That was a good call. When i got home i turned on the TV and kept falling asleep. I couldn’t stay awake for more than 15 minutes.
Sunday I was back at WFUV. That’s the day my favorite shows are on, the Irish shows, Ceol na nGael and A Thousand Welcomes and the folk shows, Woody’s Children and Sunday Supper. John Platt celebrated his 50th year on the radio, with vintage interviews, starting with Steve Goodman from John’s Chicago days.
I got home from my ten-hour shift and crashed instead of writing. On Monday, I was back at WFUV at 6 AM and then had my infusion in the afternoon. Getting an infusion is all about waiting. I arrive at 1 and didn’t get called into the infusion room until 2:15. The nurse put in the IV but the infusion was still not ready so i had to wait another 20 minutes for it to get there. I should go to a phlebotomist singles event; they took one look at my veins and say how great they are. I’m not easy but my veins. They bulge. My father was like that and i thought it was so cool as a kid. Now that I’m ancient and they are my own veins, I still think it’s cool I put my arm up and the vein disappears. It’s magic!
I should have written last night but once again was too tired, so now I’m writing while I volunteer. I was able to fall asleep at 9 last night which is great. Too bad i woke up a few times during the night and then was up for good at 4. I don’t have to leave the house until 5:30. I used some of the time to take a shower. At a little before 5 I heard a sound like metal hitting metal in my bathroom. I looked out and there was no one there. I thought it was the pipes. When i got out of the shower i heard a terrible fight going on in the apartment above mine. I quickly dried off, ran to my bedroom and called 911. This was my second 911 call because of a fight in the last three days. This one sounded worse. There was definitely violence, not just words I have no idea when the police arrived, i was out of the house by 5:15.
Now I’m up to date. Tonight I’m going to On Your Radar. I’ll try to write about that from here tomorrow.
