The Great Citi Field Expedition

Last night I had the longest outing since my surgery; I went to the Mets – Nationals game. My body held up pretty well. I’m far from full strength but I can get by.

As part of the Mets’ poor treatment of fans they now won’t allow backpacks at Citi Field. No explanation was given as to why. I take a backpack everywhere. I keep a collection of things that I always need with me in it, reading glasses, medications, battery charger, sunglasses, water bottle, earbuds, and battery charger. I had to take each out of the backpack and find someway to not just get them to the game but keep them all together and easy to find. I put them in a small zippered bag that I got with my post cataract sunglasses. I put them in a canvas shopping bag along with food I brought to the game.

The Mets are in the midst of their worst stretch of the season. They were swept by the historically bad Miami Marlins. Still it’s baseball and I enjoy it. My expectation for the Mets was lower than the general level. People got far too excited over moves that strengthened the Mets very little.

I always go to the games with Alan, last night we were joined by Seth and his friend Tim. An advantage of the Mets sucking is that the upper deck though officially reserved seats is as a matter of practice, general admission, so we can all sit together. I sat where I always sit, upper deck right before home plate. Those are excellent seats.

It’s been too long since I have hung out with Seth. I say that about a lot of people, don’t I. I will be seeing him again on Saturday, he’s getting married. He bought special Mets color sneakers to wear during the reception. Sadly Emily vetoed going to the Met game after the wedding. Seth is very understanding and is marrying her anyway. He’s a saint.

As for the game a miracle happened, the Mets won! They scored six runs, that’s six more than you might have expected. Our new hero, Pete Alonso hit a home run. He’s the best hitting Mets rookie since David Wright. The final score was 5-3. I predicted they would lose 6-2. I enjoyed being wrong.

As has happened every game this year the trip home took too long, about two hours. This is where I started fading. My D train got caught behind a work train in Manhattan. They it had to wait for work crews in the Bronx. It took 20 minutes to go the last two stops. I was tired when I got home.

I’m still not sleeping well. There are just too many little physical things bothering me. I find myself sleeping half the day and then being sleepless in bed at night. I’m fighting that. What finally got me to sleep was eating leftover Easter chocolate eggs. After that I drifted off.

I have my follow-up appointment with my surgeon today. The bus ride there is the worst part. Despite being uncomfortable I think I’m doing well. We’ll see what he has to say.

I feel bad I’m not writing more; there’s a lot going on in politics and Game of Thrones but it’s been too difficult to get up the energy to tackle them. My rule now is, listen to my body. My body wants rest.
