Nobody’s Girl But My Kind Of Band

It’s been four weeks and one day since my surgery. My body is not back to normal but I’m back to living my life and not taking it easy. Going out makes it a lot easier to write a blog about my life. Last night’s adventure was seeing Nobody’s Girl at Rockwood Music Hall. Nobody’s Girl is the trio of Rebecca Loebe, Betty Soo, and Grace Pettis. They are a fairly new band; I was tempted to say I’ve never seen them before but I don’t think it’s true. The problem is that I see Becca all the time and I’ve seen the other two and it blends in my head. Whatever the truth is I’ll be seeing them again, every time they are in town. They have it all, singing, songwriting, harmonizing, and personal chemistry. You know what they don’t have? A hook for me to write about. This is a crisis. When I started blogging I never knew how to write about concerts. Over the years I learned, I analyze. I find what’s distinctive. Now I’m shooting blanks. That’s terrible because Nobody’s Girl deserves better. They deserve me writing something that makes you want to go out and see them. You’ll have to take my word for it, the fault lies not with the band but with myself.

There were fewer people I knew there than I expected, just Fred and Howard. I thought this might be a gathering of the tribe. Fortunately the crowd was good, it just didn’t consist of my friends. We all sat in the front row. My other friends, Sophie, Jagoda, and Richard sat in the back. They are all musicians. I’ve noticed that musicians often like to sit in the back. I take it back, 5 friends at a show makes it a gathering of the tribe, especially as I got multiple hugs from Sophie.

Guess who did merch. That’s right, the cute guy. Rockwood is one of the worst places for selling merch so of course it’s where I do it the most often. There was an extra perk last night. The merch table is right by the door and who walked in but Dan and Noah. I was talking to Becca when I saw them and said, “Excuse me, I have to harass these guys.” They were there to see the next band playing. They had to wait to be let in so we had time to talk. I love running into friends. This does not count as a random-run-into. I see friends at Rockwood too often for it to be random. I thought I saw another friend, Stephanie, but it was just her twin from behind. She turned around and it wasn’t Stephie. People should be like commercial airplanes. We should all carry transponders that identify us.

After the show I did my most common dinner plan, I went to Rosario’s Pizza down the block. I didn’t get my usual, a pepperoni and sausage round Sicilian slice, the best slice in the City. Sometimes have to get one of their pretzels, the pepperoni. It’s essentially an inside out pizza. The pretzel is filled with pepperoni and cheese, you dip it in sauce. It’s the only place I know to get it and it’s wonderful.

I have no commuting stories. Both the trip there and back home went smoothly and fast. It was a beautiful night so instead of taking the F train to the D I walked to Broadway Lafayette. The walk is a great way of capping an evening of music. It gives me time to digest it. It gives the same sense of peace as meditating. Tonight’s plan should bring more of the same. I’m going to the Friday Sunset Singing Circle at Wagner Park. Group singing is good for the soul.

I had my best night’s sleep since surgery. I slept through until my alarm went off at 8:00. I woke up at 7:15 but immediately fell back asleep. The only interruption to my sleep was when I got too hot and had to change into my shorts. Even then it wasn’t bad. When I was done my head hit the pillow and I was asleep. I must have a clean conscience. I was an insomniac till about 10 years ago. My mother always blamed it on a guilty conscience. I’m 61 and the things my parents said when I was a kid are still firmly embedded in my brain.
