I thought I didn’t have a lot planned. I was wrong. I’m going to have a very busy next three days. Tomorrow I am volunteering at WFUV from 6 AM to 1PM. Then I’m off to therapy in Harrison. Tomorrow night I’m seeing the Bumper Jacksons at Rockwood. Saturday is the Caramoor American Roots Festival. That’s an all-day even and I get there early to help Carter set up. On Sunday I’m heading out across the water to Clifton New Jersey to see Carolann Solebello and Joe Iadanza at Pronoia aka Bri’s house. The concert is followed by a bonfire and song circle so that will be an all-day event too. I’m getting tired just thinking about it.
Yesterday I went to investigate something I saw from the 4 train, a large structure that was half castle and half airplane hanger. I thought I knew what it was but a walk there would give me some exercise and perhaps some good pictures. The photos aren’t great as the train is the only place to get a decent view of the place and there’s something wrong with my phone’s camera. It has cataracts, at least that’s what it looks like. Let’s see if you know what it is.
Do you know what it is? It’s a National Guard armory. The large hanger space is for drilling the troops; it’s an indoor parade ground. I used to love armories as a kid. I called them castles. The Knicks used to play many of their home games at an armory; they did not attract large crowds then.
My goal after seeing the armory was just to get some exercise. I walked down Jerome Ave to Fordham Rd. Then on Fordham to the Grand Concourse. This was my first time walking that stretch of it. Look what I discovered there.
Poe did not live in style. This is what it looks like.
Can you believe they let a historical landmark go to hell like that? I was told they’ve been doing this restoration forever. When it’s done I’ll take the tour. I love Edgar Allen Poe. I’m glad to have him as a neighbor.
Every place I’ve lived has been worth exploring. That’s because everywhere is worth exploring. Something doesn’t have to be one of the seven wonders of the world to be worth seeing. I should go out with my real camera and get better pictures. You should walk your neighborhood and take pictures. The good photos are there, you just have to find them.
