Global Warming The Mets Trump

Fiddling While Australia Burns

I had plans for a doubleheader yesterday, instead I stayed home. I didn’t see the free performance of Beethoven’s 15th String Quartet in the afternoon because I couldn’t get myself out in time. I didn’t see Kemp Harris in the evening because I couldn’t afford it. I didn’t go shopping because the weather was yucky, and I planned on doing that while I was out to see one of the shows. Some days I’m fine staying in my pjs, yesterday I wasn’t. It happens. I did manage to record an episode of Gord’s Gold, my first of the new year.

I’m not going to write anything in depth today; instead I’m going to some quick observations.

When I read about what’s going on I keep thinking; “Nero Fiddled While Rome Burned.” The world and especially the Aussie prime minister Scott Morrison are fiddling while Australia burns. That’s just a harbinger of what’s to come yet Morrison is more concerned with increasing coal production than fighting global warming. The same can be said of Trump who is trying to promote goal at the expense of renewable energy. I blamed the world before as we accept leaders that not only do nothing to help, but actively work at making things worse. We are all too close to the proverbial frog in the water being raised to a boil.

I sometimes just can’t wrap my head around the way others think. I had friends that were all excited that something happened, that happens all the time. It was like being excited that Jingle Bells is played for Christmas and praising the person that chose to play it. There’s clearly no harm done doing that. It’s not evil, or even wrong. It’s just alien to the way my mind works.

I’m excited that Ryan and Patrick are playing Great Big Sea on WFUV. I’m sure there are those that don’t get why I find that exciting. I did not get excited when they played Cherish the Ladies. I love Cherish the Ladies but as they said, they play them almost every week. That’s a better analogy than Bells as the problem was not the quality of what the people were excited about but it being totally expected.

Have you noticed that I get annoyed at trivia? At least I’m aware that it’s silly and don’t complain to the people who do them.

I’m fine with being annoyed at Trump and assassinating Qassim Suleimani. It’s not the morality of killing a terrible person. It’s not even the decision to kill him. It’s the lack of thought and appreciation of the gravity of the decision. The stated reason was to make things less dangerous, yet we are now on high alert because of increased danger. The option was reportedly given to Trump as an extreme case to make other actions seem reasonable by comparison. Anyone who tries that with Trump is not thinking. He considers being extreme a virtue. He wants to appear bold and unconventional. On the bright side this might help turn three GOP Senators to vote for calling witnesses at the impeachment trial.

I didn’t always agree with Obama’s decisions on using force, but I always respected his decisions. He understood that these are the most sensitive decisions a president could make and that the options must be carefully weighed. I often objected to objections of Obama’s actions as they were based on not on the specifics of the situations but oversimplified rubrics. They gave as little thought to the decisions as Trump does. We are not privy to all the information that the president so there is an element of trust needed. I trusted Obama’s process, but not Trump’s. He does not listen to counsel.

Who is possessing my body? I just turned on football. It’s not even a game I care strongly about, Saints versus Vikings. I should root for the Vikings as Minnesota is a blue state and Louisiana red and has restrictive abortion laws. But I am rooting for the Saints because I like their quarterback, Drew Brees. I tend to root for the team built the way I like, not where they play, other than New York of course. Let’s Go Mets! Knicks!, and Jets! God I root for bad teams. The Mets won’t be bad this year, but they are unlikely to be great. Let’s see if they have changed their way and sign Mookie Betts next year.

Now let’s see if I can get myself out of the house and go shopping.
