A Tale of Two Meals

Today will be a tale of meals and socializing. Yesterday I decided to splurge. My roommate and I ordered Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich Combos and had them delivered. I know I love my cooking and I love to cook but this was a nice change of pace with no cleanup. I hate cleanup. The sandwiches really are as good as people say. There is a related idiot story. The drink came with plastic straws that I eschewed for my reusable metal one. I thought of it as being environmentally minded but that’s not true. Did you see why? The straw still exists. I still have to get rid of it eventually. So, nothing was gained by using my metal one and you can argue that I wasted water, detergent, and energy, cleaning it with hot water. That’s not the idiot story. I’ll give myself a pass on that one. The idiot came with the cleanup. I just dumped everything in the garbage … including my straw. I had to dig through the garbage when I realized what I did. Good thing there wasn’t that much garbage in there.

I was not a fan of Disney animated features as a kid. I discovered them as an adult and went through all the Classic Era Disney. My guide was Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons. It said that the quality dropped in the 50s and I never saw Cinderella. Last night I watched it. It reminded me of all the reasons I didn’t like Disney animation as kid, the treacle and the cutesy anthropomorphic animals supporting characters. I love Fantasia, Pinocchio, and Dumbo; I appreciate the art of Snow White. Cinderella left me eh.

My phone call of the day went to Brian. We used to do radio shows together. I’m not sure if anyone other than Allison and thought we were funny, but I loved doing them. We are going to think of a way we might be able to some sort of Zoom/Facebook livestream. This is me, the king of not following through so don’t hold your breath.

Today my mother’s side of the family had zoom brunch hosted by my cousin Ayn (pronounced Ann). I was the only one that took it literally and at my brunch during it, matzoh brei to make your bubbe cry. I was the only one holding up the family tradition of eating. I suspect that this is just my tradition, well my parents too. We don’t just eat food but talk about it. You might have noticed that. I haven’t seen some of these people since my cousin (first cousin once removed) Ed’s wedding, 16 years ago. Many I didn’t know at all. They were from Ayn’s mother’s side of the family, her father was my mother’s sister, and others have just never crossed paths with me as we are spread around the country.

I will not watch all of them, but I have lots of streaming concerts on today’s agenda. I watched The Kennedys already and I am now listening to Asaran Earth Trio debut a video during a Zoom session. Anne, Lorena, and Artemisz don’t live together so this is the only way they can do it. Here’s the video. I challenge you to sit still while listening. You won’t be able to.

The lineup for the rest of the day is Richard Thompson, TAARKA, Bruce Molsky, and Evie Ladin. Do you know where you can get all the details for these shows? Social Distancing Streaming Concerts. Like the page and check out the calendar. The guy that made the page is really cute.

Know something? When I spend my time socializing I don’t have much to write about. That’s OK, I’m not paid by the word.
