Sweet Garlic Entry

It’s not the morning but at least I’m writing. It would probably help if I knew what I was writing about. I’m keeping up the good dinners; last night I had sweet garlic ham steak and fried plantains. Everyone should try sweet garlic topping, it’s so easy to do. The original recipe I saw said use 1 tbs of oil but I found that’s not enough, I just judge by eye. I use the small garlic bulbs so three cloves, don’t worry to much about the details. Dice the garlic and sauté it in the oil. Then add one or two tbs of brown sugar, you want it to be thick but not a paste. Pour and spread it over the ham. Then pop it in the oven, I used my air friar for 9 minutes at 380º. That’s it. The garlic, brown sugar, and olive oil becomes almost a glaze. It goes perfectly with the ham. While that was cooking I made the plantains in the same skillet I sautéed the garlic in, there was still remains of garlic, oil, and brown sugar. I had to add more oil. The plantains picked up some flavor from the skillet. The majority of the prep time was mincing the garlic and slicing the plantains. The cooking time was 9 minutes for everything.

For breakfast I made the French toast ham, cheese, and egg sandwich I wrote about last week. It’s not a Monte Cristo, it’s a variation of an egg sandwich, not a ham and cheese. The best description might be an omelet with a slice of bread cut in two and folded in half so that the bread ends up on the outside. Here’s the recipe, One Pan Egg toast. Like all my recipes it’s quite easy.

I had my first phone doctor’s appointment today. I had a choice of phone and video and chose phone as I don’t have anything to show her. It was with my gastroenterologist whom I love. It’s important to have a good relationship with your doctors. I have a great one with her. I’m seeing or talking to her again in August. We made an appointment, but we don’t know if it will be in person or not. I hope it’s in person. I like a gastroenterologist to feel my gut. They can feel if there’s a problem. The best part was she said there’s no way that poutine should cause me problems. Guess what I’m having for dinner tonight. I obsess a bit on food.

I also called my psychiatrist because I need my prescription refilled. I found out that she left the hospital, I knew she was going to. I had the on-call doctor call in my prescription. I have anxiety trying to get my anxiety medication

I’m writing about food because I’m putting off preaching. I built up a head of steam, but I don’t think it will do good, and that’s the point. You won’t convince anyone if you start off with, “you’re wrong.” Especially not, “You’re wrong you knucklehead.” People generally use far worse words than knucklehead. And that’s the point I want to make. When you speak try to imagine how you’d feel if somebody spoke to you that way. You can’t say, “This is different because I’m morally right.” They, whoever they are, think they are morally right. I’m going to keep this simple. Follow the Golden Rule. Don’t expect of others that which you don’t expect of yourself. Be extra careful in confrontations of tribes. Don’t dehumanize people. In wars soldiers call their enemies derogatory names. I grew up watching war movies and TV shows; the soldiers fought the Krauts and Nips, not the Germans and Japanese. It’s much easier to kill someone you don’t think of as human. We’re not at war with each other, even when we are in conflict. Don’t make up derogatory names for those that are different. It’s wrong for them, so it’s wrong for you. It doesn’t matter if they do it first. It’s not a race to the bottom.

Wasn’t it more fun talking about food? I see poutine in my near future, and an ice cream soda after that.

I’ve been a prisoner all day today. I bought a watch from Amazon, my old one broke. The new one was called “ultrathin” but was thick, heavy, and clunky. I found out that Amazon will send someone from UPS and return it for free. My printer is broken so I can’t print a mailing label and this way I don’t have to. I’ve been waiting all day for the UPS guy to come so I could give him the watch and he can put the mailing label on it. I wanted to go out today. It’s beautiful. But I don’t get my refund until the watch is returned so I want it returned ASAP. Oh great. UPS tracking says delivered. It wasn’t. it wasn’t a delivery; it was a pickup. Now I have to see if he just left the shipping label for me somewhere. I’ll be right back. He left the label without knocking, ringing the bell, or calling me.. I’ve been listening for the door all day. Now I have to figure out what to do. I called UPS and the customer service rep was great. She’s contacting the local office to figure out what happened and to arrange a pickup. I’m trying to be patient and forgiving with all that’s going on. People are under a lot of pressure and learning to do things new ways. She made my forbearance easy. She didn’t treat me like an idiot or try and blame me. Those are the two things that will get my dander up. I stayed on the line to take the survey when I was done, and I sang her praises. I hope I don’t have to sit around the house all day tomorrow. Can you believe there’s not a single UPS store in the Bronx? I’d have to go to either Yonkers or Manhattan to take care of it. Now back to happy thoughts of poutine.
