Great, I’m posting later and later. Now it’s 10:32. There was a time that I’d write when I got home which was often well after midnight. Thanks to COVID-19 I turn into a pumpkin at 1 AM when the subway stops running. I have no excuse for waiting so long to write today. I could just wait until tomorrow morning, but I don’t want an excuse to procrastinate even more. It’s now 11:43, this is the epitome of being me.
The day started weird when I went into the kitchen to make breakfast, well started is a bit of a stretch as it was close to 1 PM at the time. So, let’s go back. The day started weird when my alarm woke me up at 8 AM. I had another poor night’s sleep and considered rolling over and going back to sleep. I decided to check what the WFUV Question of the Day was. If it were a good one I’d get out of bed. I looked and had trouble figuring out what they wanted. So, I sat and thought about it. Then I realized that I hadn’t looked, that I had fallen back asleep and dreamed that I read it and still didn’t know what the QotD was. So, I tried again. I still couldn’t figure out what the question meant and thought about it with my eyes closed. Then I realized that once again I had just dreamed it. This time I forced myself to actually look at my phone and got out of bed. It was songs with the word “cool” in it. My Gentle Readers should know the first song I thought of. For many of you it will be the most obvious song. Yes, it was Dar Williams’ As Cool As I Am. Sadly nobody else suggested it. There was a time that was a WFUV staple. The station’s music and audience has changed dramatically. Back in 2002 WFUV had a dispute over their new tower with the New York Botanical Garden. There was a public hearing that I attended. The station did a concert that day to bring people in. The performers were Cherish the Ladies, Christine Lavin, Mark Erelli, Susan McKeown, The Kennedys, and Dar Williams. They are all still making music but none of them will be heard on any day but Sunday on the station. The Sundays is specialty programming, Irish music then the folk shows.
Now on to making breakfast. I turned the light on in the kitchen, and they didn’t go on. I opened the door to the microwave and the light didn’t go on. The refrigerator light wouldn’t go on. A fuse had blown. When a fuse blows the lights come on for a second then go out. That’s not what happened. I thought maybe the fuse blew at night but that didn’t happen as the ice in the freezer hadn’t melted. It must have blown so fast there was not even a surge to make a flash.
After eating and while planning on going out my phone rang. My phone never rings except for when Katrina calls. It was a friend’s personalize ring, so it wasn’t spam. When a musician calls I use their singing. A few other people, Katrina and River have their own ringtones, artists that both they and I love. I want everyone to have their own ringtone.
Talking to a friend always makes me feel better and I’ve been working on selfcare. After I got off the phone I got dressed and went out to buy Metamucil. I am having an MRI tomorrow and I have to take it before I go. I decided to use the trip to the pharmacy as the start of a walk. I have been staying inside far too much and not getting exercise or sunlight. I took 7725 steps, 2.3 miles. I need to stretch that out. If it’s not raining I’m going to go for a walk. Its good for both my mental and physical health.
As I was walking my phone rang. I recognized the music as South for Winter, which meant Katrina. I talked to her as I continued my walk. We had good timing she had to go as I got back to my block. I didn’t just talk to two friends today, they both called me. My insecure psyche appreciates that.
I started a new walking game, keeping track of state license plates. This is not a tourist neighborhood so you wouldn’t think you’d find many out of state plates, but I did. I’m going to keep a running tab and see how many states I can find. Will I ever get Alaska or Hawaii? I doubt it. I’ve seen a Hawaii plate just once in my life. It’s tough to drive to the mainland over the Pacific Ocean. Here’s what I found
- Connecticut
- Florida
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Virginia
Nothing too surprising. I didn’t see the Michigan today, but it’s been parked right in front of the building forever so I’m guessing it was there today. I won’t count Texas which I saw the other day. The strangest thing was how many cars I saw with no tags. That’s not legal. Are they stolen? How are they not towed away? I will continue to add states to my list, the only rule is that I can only count cars I see when walking to or from home. I often play walking games. Earlier this year I counted people with and without masks. I once went and counted attractive versus very attractive women. The idea of that one was to get a sense of what fraction I consider exceptional. It’s about 1/7th. My guess is that would hold no matter what I was rating. Before I had the app I would sometimes count how many steps I was taking. I see how many steps I take before I walk on a crack. I keep my brain occupied when I walk.
I better get to sleep now. It’s well past my bedtime.
