Watching the Sausage Being Made

It’s the morning after Election Day and we don’t know who won. Nobody should be surprised by this; it was the most likely scenario. Believe it or not Biden is still favored to win. He is favored in every outstanding state but Nevada. If you want to carry the state next election make sure to make the second syllable rhyme with had. I just learned that this year. I’m making an effort to say it right. I finally say or-ih-gin like a native. It’s origin with a hard G. I’m not getting off the topic here. I know that people aren’t going to listen to me when I write  about the election so I’m not going to waste my effort. We’ll find out soon enough what happens.

I’m going to write about something you will take my word for, what I did. I did not sit and watch returns all night. It took me until four o’clock, but I finally got up the initiative to go to Aldi. This was imperative as I had my heart set on eating Democracy Sausage for dinner. That’s an Australian custom that I want to bring to America. On Election day Democracy Sausages are sold from stands outside polling places. They are grilled sausages served on a slice of white bread with barbecue sauce. They usually have onions, but they are not mandatory, and I don’t like onions. Nobody was selling it at the polling places, so I made my own at home. .I screwed up and bought wheat instead of white bread. I didn’t notice till I put it on the plate. I hope that doesn’t disqualify me. In four years, I set up a stand. The tradition is that the sausage sales are fundraisers. Let’s get together and do this in four years. Nobody said they can’t be vegan sausages; not eating meat is not an excuse. Hey Australian friends, Joy, Pam, Fred, is there a gluten free alternative to white bread offered? If not America will have to come up with our own. As for the sausages I got uncured bratwurst. They looked the most like the pictures I saw of Democracy Sausages. Sadly, I had it ready on my plate for a picture and didn’t take one. It is not easy being an idiot. I made mashed potatoes in it. I used too much half & half, so it was too liquid, but they tasted great. I bought gold potatoes as those are the best for mashed. At some point I became a person that cared about using the right kind of potato for the preparation method.

I watched cartoons last night, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Blood of Zeus. I’m watching Star Wars to get the references on The Mandalorian. I’m not a huge Star Wars fan but I always enjoy finding the details for the mythology. The Silmarillion is my favorite work of Tolkien’s. There is some terrible writing in both Clone Wars and  The Mandalorian. In scene after scene I wonder, “What the hell is that character thinking?” and “How the hell did that work?” But the stories are still enjoyable. When I started getting sleepy I turned off Blood of Zeus and put on Supernatural. I don’t care if I fall asleep while watching the latter. The writing is often awful. I watched five seasons for the overarching storyline. At the end of the fifth season the show reached a natural conclusion. If they had integrity they would have stopped there. The end of that season was the high point of the show. It finally had a point. But no, they continued for another 75 seasons. Now I put it on if I want to take a nap.

I wrote another edition of Gord’s Gold; this one on Mari Black. I’m in the swing of things now. I give the music my undivided attention and then let the muse take me where it wills. I’ll record it today. I can’t plan a time. It depends on when it’s quiet enough. I almost recorded at midnight last night, but I wanted to get to bed. I woke up at 5 AM and checked the election results. There was nothing new, but I got anxious. I meditated and fell back asleep. I suggest you do the same. Do not torture yourself.

I treated myself to a special breakfast yesterday, an omelet. I screwed up and forgot to spray the pan, so it stuck to the bottom. It didn’t look pretty but it tasted fine. Today I’ll calm myself with an even better breakfast, French toast made with chocolate chip brioche. Comfort food gives comfort and I’m going to indulge myself. Suffering isn’t a virtue. You should indulge yourself too. One way to do that is to listen to Gord’s Gold  today. It’s on at noon, six, and midnight. I talk about the Chicks with Dip. They are much more pleasant to think about than the election. It’s on Folk Music Notebook.
