The Love For Three Oranges

I said in my last entry that my KN95 masks were arriving Tuesday. I was wrong, they came yesterday. Once they were in my hand I felt safe to go shopping. I put a new mask on, put an old cloth mask in my pocket to wear on top while I was on the bus and in the store, and headed out. With the new strains of COVID-19 spreading we have to be even more careful than we were before. I was delighted to find that every person I passed and everyone on the bus was wearing a mask correctly. I didn’t see a single nose. I took a selfie of myself on the bus.

Who is that masked man?

Do you see what’s wrong with that picture? You see my new mask; it should be under my cloth mask. I will not call myself an idiot. It takes a while to acquire new habits. Next time I’ll remember. When I got off the bus compliance was not quite as strong, some people were maskless, and a few more were showing their nose. A strong majority were taking the proper precautions. That includes all the policemen I saw. For a while cops were not being good about wearing masks. Few wore them at the demonstrations. My guess is that somebody laid down the law to them. That’s how it should be. Everything was great in the store until after I had checked out then I saw some noses. Immediately outside the store, in a partially enclosed area, there was a knot of maskless people. I passed a few nose peepers on the way to the bus. On the bus one person was nursing a drink the entire time as if that would stop her from spreading the virus.

There was an article in the times on how nose peeping is the new manspreading. As that knot of people was all women I decided to count the rest of the way. Of the seven noses I saw on my way home five belonged to women. The idea of collective guilt is morally wrong. We should not be encouraging. It isn’t wrong only when they do it, it’s wrong when we do it. The only reasons that the ideas of man and woman, white and black, straight and LGBT, need to be considered is that people wrongly assign preconceived notions to them. People should be judged on the content of the character, not the color of their skin, the type of genitals they have, or who they are attracted to. You believe that or you don’t. It is literally prejudice, pre-judging people.

I was good when I went shopping and bought oranges. As I have tried so many times before my goal is to be more of a frugivore. There are not many fruits that I both like and can eat but oranges are one of them. I should eat an orange a day. To help myself do that I’m keeping them in a bowl in the living room right in front of me, so I’m constantly reminded of them. I had one yesterday and one today. Let’s see how long I can keep this up. I’m far from a health fanatic but I like to pick the low hanging fruit so to speak. That is my philosophy for many constructive changes. Do the things that don’t take a huge effort or major changes in lifestyle. Years ago, I switched from incandescent bulbs to compact florescent as that was an easy way to save energy. Now it’s the law. I’m up to getting LCD bulbs now. The little things that are done often add up. Want to lesson your carbon footprint by a more efficient refrigerator. That’s what uses the most energy in you home.

Time for dinner. I’m doing something I don’t often do, making Mac and Cheese. I bought it at Aldi. I have no idea if it’s any good. I’ll let you know. If it is, then it’s a ridiculously cheap side dish. I’m having it with barbecue country style ribs.
