Infusion Serendipity

Yesterday’s adventures revolve around my infusion. The car service arrived early so I rushed to get down there. I didn’t forget anything, but I did overdress. It was quite a bit warmer than I was prepared for. I never zipped up my jacket or wore my hat and gloves. Medicaid provides the car to take to the infusion. I take advantage of that to combine it with a shopping trip. There’s a good bagel store across the street and a Stop & Shop. They car arrives an hour before the appointment and it only takes 15 to 20 minutes to get there. When I arrive, I go across the street for the bagels. The store closes earlier than I get out sometimes. I lucked out. Hot bagels were on the way out and I ate one right out of the oven. That’s the best. The rest I take home to freeze. I got to the infusion center early and that led to me getting taken early. I hardly waited in the waiting room and once I was in the chair I didn’t have to wait too long for the infusion to start. I had more great timing. I had a podcast to listen to during the procedure and it finished a minute before the infusion ran out. As usual I liked the people working there. I had a new nurse this time, Clyde. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Clyde before.

When I was finished with my infusion I went across the street to the Stop & Shop. I bought more food than usual, that’s good as I should be minimizing my time in contact with others. The exciting part was that frozen wings were on sale. Guess what I’ll be eating during the super bowl. I have to check. After I left I realized I might be out of hot sauce. If I am I’ll have to run to the local supermarket today and buy some. I want my Buffalo wings.

After shopping I went back to the medical center to wait for the car. In the waiting room the people were not masked properly or at all. This is at a building filled with immune compromised people. Then one person who had taken his mask off to talk on the phone, finished his phone call and started playing music, very loudly. I asked them nicely to turn it down, but soon it was back up to uncomfortable levels. Why have some people never discovered ear buds? That drove me to wait outside. I should have done it because of the unmasked people. I told the people at reception that nobody had masks on, and the response was, “that’s terrible, tell them put them on.” I was hoping for a more pro-active response.

The second I got home my phone rang. This was the fourth day in a row I got a phone call! That’s a good thing. I took my coat off and put my earbuds in. Only after talking a bit did I realize I hadn’t taken my mask off. I then forgot I had the earbuds in, and they got tangled in each other. I finally sorted it out and had a great conversation. That’s an important part of keeping my sanity during the pandemic.

I didn’t blog yesterday, so I never told you that I played bridge online with Roy. He used to be my regular partner; we’d play every week. Now it’s been years. We had an above average game. That was a surprise. Best of all I got to play and hang out with Roy. He was the previous day’s call. I have time for these sorts of things and should do them.

Last night I got great news. A friend with Crohn’s let me know that I’ll be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting on February 15. Here is Governor Cuomo’s announcement as to who will be eligible

I qualify twice, once as immunocompromised state; that’s because of my infusions. I take Entyvio an immunosuppressant. Secondly I score on the first point as I had cancer. It says in remission counts. I haven’t been bothered in 20 years, so I’m not worried about it. I’m more concerned with the infusions. Whatever it is I have to start looking into how to get the vaccine. They are opening a vaccination center at Yankee Stadium. I can walk there, a long walk, but it might be better to go to the one opening in Queens at Citi-Field. It’s an hour and a half trip but I won’t risk getting Yankee cooties.

I’m planning on watching the Super Bowl tomorrow. I’m not just planning on it. I’m looking forward to it and not just because of the wings. This is unusual for me. Many years I’ll go out and hear music on Super Bowl Sunday. I love Mahomes and hate Brady, so I have a strong rooting interest in this one.

I’ve had things to write about lately. Maybe tomorrow I won’t so I can get philosophical and political. Now it’s sausageeggandcheese on a bagel time. At least my tummy is telling me that.
