I simply forgot to blog today. I’ll see what I can get done while I listen to Gord’s Gold on Folk Music Notebook. It’s going to be tough as the guy that programs it knows exactly what music I love, and he tells great stories. It’s radio so I can’t see what he looks like, but he sounds really cute. Women should be throwing themselves at him. If not there’s something wrong with the world. There’s something wrong with the world.
I had an unexpected adventure yesterday, some group associated with a church distributed big boxes of free food to anyone that wanted it. My roommate and I both took one. Each box had something like 20 lbs of food. They weren’t all the same but we each got 5 lbs of apples and 5 lbs of potatoes and a bag of onions, not sure the size. OK this was more than 20 lbs. Each box had a gallon of milk, the produce and milk weigh 20 lbs alone. One had a block of mozzarella cheese and another a bag of it shredded. One had a bag of frozen meatballs and one of frozen rotisserie chicken. Each had a pound of hot dogs. Our refrigerator and freezer are stuffed to the gills. Oh, I forgot the yogurt. It was like winning the lottery. I’m going to be eating very well, at least in terms of quantity. I will be sure to drink a glass of milk a day.
I’ve reached the point where for over a week I’m averaging walking 3.35 a day for the last week. My goal is three miles a day, over the course of the last month I’m averaging only 2.39 miles/day. The walking is one way I’m doing a good job of selfcare. I’m also eating three mandarin oranges a day. Where I’m falling short is my sleep. The fact that I’m writing at 11:29 means that I won’t be in bed by midnight like I like. I have to do the dishes after I finish here. Then comes the worst part, playing on my phone for an hour once I’m in bed. I had to force myself to not do that.
I just turned off Gord’s Gold because I decided I needed to work on next week’s show. There’s an album that I know I want to play but have to decide which song. I love when that’s a problem. Another problem I’ll have next week is saying the names of the song, one is in Irish Gaelic and another in Hebrew and Arabic. There’s a lot more to folk music than Jimmy Crack Corn. I wrote a Pakistani American musician living in Brooklyn for a copy of her new album. I’ll have to ask her the language. Urdu is the official language or the country but it’s more of a lingua franca rather than the language spoken at home. Pakistan was part of India and like the rest of the subcontinent there are a plethora of languages spoken. That’s what creates the need for a lingua franca.
Like many newscasts I’ll end with the sports. The Mets have won their last two games despite half the team being on the Injured list. They lost two players to hamstring injuries, both former all-stars, Conforto and McNeil on the same play. Yesterday’s starting pitcher Walker, who has been the team’s second-best pitcher had muscle tightness and had to be removed from the game. Not only the team’s but all of baseball’s best pitcher deGrom is on the injured list. Worst of all Kevin Pillar was hit in the face by a 94-mph fastball yesterday. The game was on ESPN so I could watch. It was gruesome. His nose was broken in multiple places, which meant a lot of blood. Today he felt well enough to bring out the lineup card for the team. He will now be a fan favorite. He literally bled for the team. As the bases were loaded he drove in a run in a tight game when he was hit. The pitcher wasn’t trying to hit him. Everyone on both teams was shaken. Pillar was upset he was letting the team down when so many players are out with injuries. The Mets were down two outfielders, Nimmo and Conforto before Pillar went down. You gotta love the guy.
Gord’s Gold is glittering in the Rebel Alliance Fantasy Baseball league. That’s my team of course. We won the last two weeks and are in second this week. We are in fifth place out of 11 but rising fast. My teams always start off slow because I don’t care how the players are doing when the draft is held. Players with poor starts come at a discount so I end up with them. I don’t do that consciously; I just ignore their stats and other people don’t. I love baseball, whether the real thing or fantasy.
It’s after midnight, I better put this to bed so I can then put myself to bed.
