Here’s a peek inside my brain. I just read something on Facebook that got me mad. Ten seconds later I have no idea what it was. I’m not going to go back and try and find it. It was neither politics nor baseball, the two topics that generate the most posts that offend me.
Guess who once again didn’t leave the house yesterday. I have to start braving the heat and humidity and going out anyway. Yesterday I had a good excuse, the Mets played a day game and deGrom was pitching. He was quite human, giving up two runs in seven innings and striking out “only” ten batters. He didn’t get the win, but The Mets won in extra innings. I read so many complaints about what’s wrong with baseball and I think this season is terrific. It’s not just that the Mets are winning and it’s not just deGrom having a season for the ages; it’s all the players having seasons for the ages. Ohtani is going where no man has gone before; He has hit 32 home runs, is second in the Majors in OPS+, stolen 12 bases, and oh yeah, is also an all-star pitcher (he doesn’t deserve that), but he still throws the ball 100 mph. Then there’s all the young stars; the top three position players in Wins Above Replacement (Fangraphs) are 22-year-old Vlad Guerrero, 22-year-old Fernando Tatis, who plays the game with as much elan as I’ve ever seen, and 23-year-old Ronald Acuña. At age 26 Cedric Mullins decided to go from mediocre to a superstar. Trey Mancini was diagnosed with colon cancer in April 2020, he’s participating in the home-run derby on Monday. People are just looking for things to be negative about, baseball is great. On the seventh day God created baseball. He didn’t say “it was good” because God does not state the obvious.
The Mets played a day/night doubleheader, and I missed the night game. That’s because I was on the phone talking to a friend the entire time. I love long phone calls with friends. That was well worth missing the game for. I just home the Mets didn’t lose it because they were disappointed I wasn’t watching. While I’m sure their primary motivation is making me happy they didn’t know I wasn’t watching.
I was on the phone until 10:30 when I finally got off because I hadn’t had dinner. I had planned on making pork loin but by then it was too late to start cooking that. I went for the emergency quick meal that I’ve been looking forward to, matzoh brei pepperoni pizza. This time I fried it in olive oil, and then I popped the cast iron skillet into the oven to cook the sauce and cheese. That made a big difference. This was the perfect blend of Italian and Jewish food culture. I should open a matzoh brei pizzeria. How does it look? ? Bah, the picture didn’t come out. Believe me, it looked great.
Today I submitted my play list the Folk-dj list. That’s how the compile the Folk charts. I always look at my last submission to make sure I have it formatted right. When I did that I saw that I hadn’t submitted last week’s list. That’s bad as that was in June, so those plays won’t count for the June chart. I screwed up just as I’m getting good at the DJ gig. Things that used to be difficult now come easily. It takes me much less time to record the show. When I make a recording mistake I’ve gotten better at editing it out. When I record the promos that I post on social media I experiment with Audacity, the recording software I use. Last week I tried lowering my voice by a halftone. I always think my voice is high and squeaky. I wondered if anyone noticed. I did. I would not do that on my show unless it was done for humor. It was hot when I recorded this week’s promo, and I didn’t want to turn my fan off. In the playback the fan sound was loud. I used noise reduction to eliminate it, it worked. I didn’t notice that changing my voice, but I wouldn’t risk it on my show.
Breaking news. Gord’s Gold is moving to Thursdays at 9 PM on Folk Music Notebook with a 2 AM rebroadcast. I marked that on calendar, you better do that too, so you don’t forget. I know you don’t want to miss an episode and plan your entire week around listening to Gord’s Gold. Do NOT burst my bubble. I see the world as it should be, not as it is.
Tonight, I’m going to listen to live music! Courtney Barnett, no Brandi Carlile, no Nicole Atkins, they are nothing alike but I conflate those three, is playing a free show at Wagner Park. Here’s the info on it, River and Blues: Nicole Atkins. Have you noticed how often I write about my brain malfunctions? I don’t think I do things like that more often than most people, I just talk about them more. At least that’s what I tell myself. This way when your brain malfunctions you won’t feel bad about it. You’ll say, “Gordon does that kind of thing all the time and he’s great.” Remember do NOT burst my bubble.
Now to make breakfast. I’ll discover what I’m eating after I’m in the kitchen.
