Baseball DJ Folk Music Notebook Gord's Gold The Mets

MC Horvendile

Yesterday’s adventure was going to the Met game. Tonight’s too. I could have heard live music right before by Terry Waldo but instead I’m blogging and making a phone call I have to make. I’m paying for my procrastination. I should run to the supermarket, but I forgot what I need. My faults are coming out of the woodwork today. That reminds me, I did buy two kinds of pest control, the six-legged variety, let’s see if they work. I applied them yesterday and so far, today I’ve seen none. The test is late tonight, that’s when they come out the most. As for the Mets, … they didn’t win. Do you know what hurts as much, maybe more than the Mets losing? It’s the so-called Mets fan that boo and ridicule the team. They equate not getting a hit to not making an effort. As Ted Williams said, hitting a baseball is the most difficult feat in all of sports. There is no need to speculate, we know that pitchers are throwing harder, much harder, than ever and doing so without a loss of control or command. You put Ted Williams up against these guys he’d have trouble hitting, at least until he adjusted. It has nothing to do with effort. A guy doesn’t run out a ground ball, you have cause to criticize his character. He waves weakly at a pitch that you’d be terrified to stand in the box against, and the lack of character is on the part of the person that boos and shouts, you suck! One super annoying guy who has been at many recent games explicitly says that the players aren’t hustling, and never did. As we were on the elevator leaving the game Alan and finally noticed that we were wearing the same Mets shirt. We both have many shirts and Alan doesn’t even usually wear a Mets shirt to games so that was a remarkable coincidence that we laughed at. One fan in the elevator was upset with us for enjoying ourselves. The Mets lost but it was an exciting 3-2 game to the team with the best record in the National League. The best advice I heard at a sportscast, I think it was Ralph Kiner, but it might not even have been baseball, was, A team is never as good as it looks when it’s winning or as bad as it looks when it’s losing.

That reminds me what I need to buy, popcorn to bring to the game. That’s my new snack, I air-pop it at home, top it with olive oil and garlic salt, and pack it in a bag. When I do that, I see that the big bowl of popcorn fills a small bag. I love buying food at the game but it’s so damn expensive that I bring my own.

I have what’s for me is exciting DJ news. I’m going to introduce Emerald Rae at the Brooklyn Americana Fest. What? You don’t know the Brooklyn Americana Fest? If you live in Greater New York, you should go. I’ll be working Friday night under the Dumbo Arch. The lineup is

  • 5pm Emerald Rae
  • 5.30pm Bobtown
  • 6.30pm Eleanor Buckland
  • 7pm Crys Matthews and Heather Mae
  • 8pm Mike Younger
  • 9pm Jesse Lenat

Make sure to get there on time to see me. Emerald, Bobtown, and Crys & Heather are all favorites. If you don’t know I love Bobtown you must not know me very well. Check out the entire festival’s schedule. Come by and say hi to me. It looks like I’ll be going on Sunday too. I will not be going to the Met game on Sunday. I was offered the ticket but it’s my friend’s birthday party that I go to every year. Unless it rains, I’ll go on Saturday. That’s even better as that’s the day they retire Jerry Koosman’s number.

Tonight, is Thursday, that means you should be listening to Gord’s Gold on Folk Music Notebook at 9 PM ET. Every show I do is the best ever, at least that’s how it feels. I should record a promo for it before I go to the game. Here is a list of the artists you will hear.

  • Dar Williams
  • Anaïs Mitchell
  • Joe Crookston
  • Madeleine Peyroux
  • Steve Goodman
  • Jean Rohe
  • Amy Kucharik
  • Heartwood
  • Norah Jones
  • Rebecca Loebe
  • Susan Werner
  • Tanya Donelly and the Parkington Sisters
  • The Jim Kweskin Band & Samoa Wilson
  • The Sea the Sea

Damn, that’s a strong lineup, part of me wants to stay home and listen. If you won’t be home, you can catch the repeat stream at 2 AM.

Now to do the things I have to do. I’m going to forego getting popcorn. I’ll figure out another snack.
