I’m once again trying to write while watching the Mets. This will happen more often as I start my new job. This is a tough Met game. They fell behind 4-0, tied it up, now just allowed a three-run-homer to fall behind 7-4, It’s only the fourth inning. Fasten your seatbelts, this is going to be a bumpy ride.
Yesterday was a rarity, I went out to eat. For my friend Carey’s person Barbara’s birthday Carey took friends out for dinner. Not only is this rare because of COVID-19, this was rare for me as we went to a steakhouse, Outback, and I had a ribeye. Guess how I had it cooked? That’s right, rare. Outback is Australian and I’m always disappointed that they serve beef, shouldn’t it be kangaroo? If they did the place would be jumping. This was a very nerdy crowd with discussions of Viking and English history, literature, Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock films and TV show, Disney animation, and Degrassi I did not take part of the Degrassi conversation. Fine, I made one contribution. I knew that Carey was a fan and when I saw that some cable station was showing The Kids of Degrassi street I recorded it for him.
The restaurant is Chelsea so afterward I do what I always do when I’m in that neighborhood, shop at Trader Joe’s. I forgot to bring a shopping bag, so I had to carry my groceries in a paper bag. I didn’t just feel environmentally guilty, but I couldn’t put it over my shoulder. The ride there was annoying. The train stops at Yankee Stadium and the car filled with grumpy Yankee fans; the team had just lost. I was feeling great as the Mets had just won. I had to listen to the end of the game on the train. Then I got grumpy. The train just sat at the station. There was a delay. There was an announcement, but the grumpy Yankee fans wouldn’t stop talking so I couldn’t hear what he said. We started moving then hit another delay where we sat in the tunnel. Then when we got to 125th street instead of running express it went local. Once it hit 59th street I was hoping it would continue to run local so I wouldn’t have to change trains to get off at 23rd street. You know what happened; my stop was the first one skipped, so I had to wait for an E train running on the F train tracks. I was late for dinner. You can call me anything you want except late for dinner. I was incredibly good and didn’t hurt any of the Yankee fans riding with me.
In the evening there was another Met game, a day-night double header. That didn’t go well, the Mets lost. As compensation I discovered that there was an unannounced 11th episode of Sandman that I had missed. It was largely independent of the rest of the series. It was made just to make it clear that the entire book and series were made specifically for River and me. It had two Doctor Who actors in it. David Jakobi, a favorite of mine made an appearance. I loved I Claudius and saw him at least three times on Broadway. Best of all but one of the main characters was an author named Richard Madoc. The name Madoc comes straight from the writings of my favorite author James Branch Cabell. Madoc is a poet. Better yet Cabell said that Madoc was probably the name of Horvendile in his youth. Horvendile is my nom de internet. The theme was taken straight from Cabell, the story was called Calliope, it was a story about the muse’s relationship with Madoc. Cabell, and Horvendile aka Madoc were obsessed with the source of artistic inspiration. Should I ask Neil Gaiman to marry me? He is wooing me.
I had a political entry planned today based on Venn Diagrams. Looks like I’ve already written in entry, so I’ll save it for another day. My plan for the rest of today is to record Gord’s Gold and then watch the Game of Thrones sequel House of the Dragon. I as planning on going out for a walk, but this Met game has been going on for almost 3 hours and the fifth inning just ended. I hope it’s over by 9:00 when House of the Dragon starts.
