I’ll start with the easy stuff. I went to last night’s Mets game against Colorado. I had a choice of games and chose this one because the greatest pitcher on the planet, Jacob deGrom was pitching. If I could I’d see every deGrom start. Each one can be a gem. Jake only retired the first 13 batters before allowing a baserunner, it was on an infield hit. He gave up one run, on a home run in the 6th but on the deGrom scale that was just an average start. I have not seen anything like him since Doc Gooden in 1986. Every pitch is a thrill when he’s on the mound. Mets got all the runs they needed on Lindor driving in a run on a fielder’s choice followed by Pete Alonso hitting a mighty home run. It just missed going into the second deck. This is the most fun Mets team since at least 2006, perhaps since 1986. Here’s a list of my favorite, not best, players on the team. Many of them are the best, I love greatness. Don’t take the order too seriously.
- Jacob deGrom
- Francisco Lindor
- Edwin Diaz
- Brandon Nimmo
- Pete Alonso
- Luis Guillorme
- Jeff McNeil
- Daniel Vogelbach
- Carlos Carrasco
You can pretty much shuffle 4 through 8 any way you want.
I always go to the games with Alan, but he had to work late and didn’t arrive until the third inning. I sat with a stranger who became a friend Paulo. He’s a filmmaker originally from Chicago, a Cubs fan who has adopted his new team. We bonded over the way we are baseball fans. He said nothing stupid, that’s pretty amazing for a baseball fan. He understands the game. He’s interested in learning more. He’s open minded. Most of all he loves baseball, and he loves the Mets. We became Facebook friends and I’m sure I’ll be seeing him again. When I’m at a game with Alan and it’s possible I’ll sit with Paulo. His season seats are better than Alan’s. There just has to be two open seats near him like there was yesterday.
I discovered a major advantage of my new wireless earbuds. There’s no cord to get tangled in my mask. I of course still mask up whenever I’m in an indoor public space, especially public transit, which is where I usually use earbuds. It was always a pain to remember which I put in first, the earbuds or the mask as I had to take them off in reverse order. Little things that make things less complicated mean a lot to me. When I post Gord’s Gold I need to put the songs in the right order. I used to have this ridiculous routine where I would search for then song on the playlist and put it in the next stop. I then figured out that if I reorder my spreadsheet by song title, I could then look at any song, see where on the list the song belongs, and change the file name so that it leads with it’s track number. Then I reorder the files by name and the show is ready to load. That doesn’t just save me time, it saves Ron time when he puts it on the air. There’s a general principle involved, it’s much easier to work through a sorted list than an unsorted.
Gord’s Gold was on during the game last night, so I missed it. You don’t have to as now you can stream it. Even easier you can listen to it right from here.
As always, I’m ordinately proud of the show. I was going to say inordinately but decided to not feign false modestly.
Every day I say I need to go shopping. Every day I don’t go shopping. Today I’ll really do it. I hope. I’ll try.
The cover picture is deGrom’s first pitch of the game. It went for a strike.
