Coffee Food idiot story Politics

Civics Lesson

I have a meeting in an hour. Let’s see if I can get something written by then. What exciting things did I do yesterday? Nothing. I even made a cheater dinner, a frozen Jamaican Spicy Beef Patty. I don’t buy prepared foods anymore, not for years, but these are good and I can’t make it at home. I didn’t check how much sodium it has. Prepared foods usually have like three times the RDA. I don’t have a problem with my blood pressure so that shouldn’t be an issue. Sodium is very bad for some people, not for everyone. I had fried plantain with it because I love fried plantain and it goes with the Caribbean patty. There’s some Islander in me.

I got something accomplished, I programmed next week’s Gord’s Gold before this week’s is streamed. That’s how I like it to go. I can now start work on my holiday and year in review shows. The latter requires some devoted listening time. I am going to have to add the candidates to Amazon Music so I can listen during my commute, otherwise there isn’t enough time in the day. I listened to an album that I hadn’t heard yet because I had noted one song I wanted to play. Last night I gave it a serious listen. I decided it wasn’t going to make my list and wasn’t worth buying the entire album. I just bought the one song. Perhaps I should have written to the artist first and seen if I could be sent a copy. That’s what I usually do but I wanted to play this song next week.

There are two idiot stories for today. The first is that I left my travel coffee mug on the kitchen table. That counts as a major disaster. I had to settle for inferior k-cup coffee in a disposable cup. It didn’t taste nearly as good and was far less green. That led to my second coffee related idiot story. Katelyn Jetalina aka Your Local Epidemiologist wrote that we are going through a triple respiratory epidemic, COVID, Flu, and RSV so we should be more careful. I decided to wear my mask at school when not talking  to students. I use a KN95. I have to pull it down to drink my coffee. So what did the genius do? I spilled coffee on my mask. Now I’m wearing one of the surgical masks the school provides. It’s not nearly as protective and you can tell because my glasses fog up due to the inferior seal.

I want to get back to talking about politics, which means getting back to people not knowing what they are talking about. One of the social studies teachers was talking about an assignment he gave the class to teach them what a president can and cannot do. Trump was shocked to discover the limits to his power, but I would hope that most adults understand it. Sadly many, perhaps most don’t. I know somebody that decided he’s not going to vote in 2024 because Biden hadn’t extended the enhanced child tax credits instituted by the American Rescue Plan. Biden tried to do it. He supports it, but it’s congress’s job to allocate spending. It didn’t have enough support there. I’m 100% in favor of it. Biden is 100% in favor of it. The vast majority of the Democrats in congress are in favor of it but as we all learned, that’s not how a bill becomes a law. We don’t live in a dictatorship. Many people would prefer that we did as long as the dictator does things they agree with. People will blame politicians who support the policies they prefer, if those policies are blocked by others. They want them to be like the extremist Republicans and shut down the government to get their way. Not that the extremists Republicans got their way.

In a democracy you are not always going to get your way, even when your way is what’s best for the country. That is how it should be as nobody is in a position to absolutely know what’s best. I like the way that Asimov put it about eugenicists; they believe in survival of the fittest where the self-declared fit determine the criteria for fitness. It’s an easy trap to fall into.

Now I have to get to my meeting. I hope it’s productive.
