Nun But The Brave

I’m starting my writing to the Carmen Fantasy of Pablo de Sarasate. How does that work? It’s based on Bizet’s Carmen? Does copyright not apply? That’s not why I mentioned it. It’s just that I love it. I’m all for the intellectual and prefer Wagner but you have to work to not love Carmen; the melodies are irresistible. There are many bad things going on but that doesn’t mean that the world is terrible. We get to live in the same universe as Bizet and Wagner; that’s a stroke of great fortune. I might be clinically depressed but I’m also a cheerful hobbit, I will not ignore the things that are wonderful because of the things that are terrible. To restore balance to the Force you have to embrace the light side not just fight the dark. Can you tell I’m rewatching the Skywalker Saga? I’m watching them in the order of release not internal chronology. I’m not even a huge Star Wars fan but it’s still fun and I appreciate the scope. I just wish it had been better written.

In between the films I binge watched Warrior Nun. When I first heard of it I thought it was a joke. Then found out it was based on a comic book series. It’s about an order of nuns dedicated to fighting demons. One of whom is the halo bearer. She has an angel’s halo implanted in her that gives her superpowers. I thought it might be similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it’s certainly in the same genre. There’s less humor but there’s enough to recognize how ridiculous the entire premise is. The characters know it’s ridiculous. At a critical juncture, the nuns are trying to enter a hidden crypt, something of utmost importance, one nun says, “If trading terrible puns is wrong then I don’t want to be right.” They are my kind of people.

Unlike Buffy the divided into ten episodes it’s not episodic. It’s much more like Game of Thrones or The Expanse telling a long story in serialized form. The story isn’t over so now I can’t wait until the second season. I hate waiting. I have one friend that will only watch a series until it’s finished it run so she doesn’t have to wait. I understand that.

I didn’t talk to anyone yesterday which makes it more important that I talk to a friend today. I also need to record the next edition of Gord’s Gold. It would help if I decided who to write about. Should that be whom? Is it an object or a subject? I could use William Safire’s rule. If you are about to use “whom” recast the sentence so that “who” is right. I rarely agreed with his politics but on language Safire was aces.

I should go out, it’s a beautiful day. I’m waiting for a delivery of 40 lbs of cat litter and want to be here when it comes and not leave it for my roommate. I’ll then wrestle it inside. Tomorrow I go out for bagels or die in the attempt. Unless of course it rains. I should take a walk to the Bronx Forest. I could use some nature. Even more I can use some friends. I’m working my way up to taking the subway to Brooklyn to see people. I wish I had a teleporter. Teleportation is the superpower I most often fantasize about. Does anyone else fantasize about teleporting to Europe and then wondering about the legal ramifications of entering illegally? I don’t even have a passport. Even if I had a passport there would be no entry stamp. Now it’s worse as Americans are not allowed to enter Europe. I’d have to escape via teleportation if anyone asked to see my passport.

Now you know where my mind is today. I’m not feeling evangelical and I don’t want to preach politics or moral philosophy. I want to think about the teenage nuns with superpowers and teleporting to see my friends. Even that’s not simple as the title carrier, The Warrior Nun, is not a nun. She’s not even religious. She was just at the right or is that wrong place at the right or is that wrong time. I can never escape my need to be accurate.
