Those are the Breaks

Today you’ll get my promised medical update. My appointment was for 8:45 so I planned on getting up at 7:30. Instead I woke up at 6:50. My first thought was great, now I don’t have to rush. My second thought was that I was in a lot of pain and getting out of bed wouldn’t be easy; it wasn’t. I finally made it out at 7:30. Then came the challenge, getting dressed by myself when I was not off to a good start. It took a lot of effort but I did it. It also took too much time. My wonderful roommate waited for me so I didn’t need an Uber, even though that and traffic meant she was late to where she was going.

I brought a CD of the X-rays taken in Maine and I gave them to the nurse when I arrived. The doctor was not happy with them. There was no orthopedic specialist at the hospital when was there. That meant more X-rays and more waiting. I finally did get to see the doctor. I liked her. She put the new X-ray on her computer and I could see that it was a displaced fracture, not a hairline. I asked her if it was on the original X-rays. I was worried it has gotten worse since then. She couldn’t tell, that’s why she had the new X-ray taken. They never took the best angle. I lucked out, even though it’s displaced, there’s enough overlap that the bone will be able to knit and I don’t need surgery. She then gave me useful advice on how to wear my sling, shower, and do other things around the house. She even said I could type. I’m doing that now though it’s awkward. I’ll have to find a better place to work.

I took an Uber home and discovered that I had not taken my keys with me. They usually go in my left pocket that I can’t reach. I didn’t do my usual pat down upon leaving. I called my roommate and discovered she was home, she let me home. That was pretty much it for my day, I was drained. I didn’t even make breakfast or coffee. I had a peanut butter sandwich at 2 PM. I spent most of the day sleeping. I did manage to make dinner. I got a call from my principal which was great as that meant I didn’t have to call or right. I told him the Doc said I can come back on 12/11. Now I don’t have the energy. The main problem is getting jostled on the subway and in school. As I discovered when I got hurt, I’m not 16 and can no longer expect to heal quickly.

I’ve now written two days in a row. Am I back? That would be nice.
